A few years ago I was in an airport waiting for my flight, back to Phoenix. As I approached the seating area I noticed an elderly lady crocheting. She started to tell me all about her church and how their supporting christian elementary schools in Costa Rica. Then she turned and ask me if I believed that Jesus died for my sins. I answered, yes I do. Well she replied, the answer to getting to heaven and being saved, is believing that Jesus died, and was buried and rose again, this is the gospel; the good news. She continued, well if you believe in the gospel, then you’ll be saved. She asked, do you know what the gospel is? I responded with only a smile. She said, well the gospel is when you believe that Jesus died, was buried and rose again for our sins. She was so persistent that her understanding of the gospel was correct, she even wrote it out on a piece of paper and said that I was to review her note once I had returned home, so I wouldn’t forget her important message.
Well after returning, I had forgotten about her note, until about a month later. When I found it, I asked myself, well what does the Bible say the gospel is.
I discovered in the writing of apostle Paul to his letter to the Galatian church, that he taught what the true gospel is; Its “God (Spirit) calling us into the grace of Jesus Christ”. But he doesn’t stop there…he continues to teach that God calls us into his grace, by the revelation of Jesus”. Wow, how exciting. The gospel is God doing the calling me into his grace by revealing his Son in me. Reference Galatians 1: 6-16
